The educational program at Sakura Kindergarten combines a bilingual curriculum with the Japanese education method. As a result, every school activity is infused with the beautiful cultural values of the Land of the Rising Sun. Among them, Sumo—Japan’s famous traditional martial art—is not only a sport but also holds many lessons about strength, perseverance, respect for opponents, and disciplined living.

With the desire to bring these values closer to the children, the school organized the Sakura Sumo Tournament 2025. This activity not only helped the children improve their health, reflexes, and coordination but also nurtured their sense of sportsmanship, respect for rules, and respect for opponents. Through each match, the children learned to give their best, to be strong in competition, yet to smile whether they won or lost. These are exactly the values the school aims to instill in its students.

Before the big day, the “little wrestlers” had an energetic practice and rehearsal session. From learning the traditional Sumo bow, practicing powerful stomps, to getting familiar with the rules of competition, everything took place in an atmosphere that was both serious and full of laughter.

On the morning of August 8, 2025, Sakura’s schoolyard transformed into a blazing dohyō (sumo ring). The opening drumbeat sounded, kicking off a series of surprising qualifying matches: some “one-touch” bouts ended in an instant, while others were neck-and-neck, keeping the audience on edge. The children gave their all with powerful pushes, clever dodges, and even some spectacular “backflops” that were both hilarious and impressive. Cheers from teachers, parents, and fellow students made the atmosphere even more electric.
